Collar-Mounted Accelerometer

PetDialog+ is the next generation of pet wellness monitors by Zoetis Centre for Digital Innovation. It is a small, non-invasive accelerometer that is worn on the collar, acting as more than just an activity monitor to establish a dog’s behavioural rhythms.

The problem

A vet is able to see a pet for around 10 – 15 minutes at a time and usually during the first and last years of a pet’s life. For the ‘in-between’ times, the vet will rely heavily on the pet’s owner for most of their assessment information. But most owners do not have vet training, and the potential for wrongful assessment is high.

The solution

PetDialog+ collects data from your pet and provides a holistic viewpoint of a pet’s wellbeing. Unlike most pet monitors currently on the market, PetDialog+ tracks more than just motion but tracks a wide range of data points that it translates into behavioural states which can signal and flag potential problems before they arise.

The science

PetDialog+ is a tri-axial accelerometer that detects movement patterns in three planes and transfers kinetic data via Bluetooth 4.0 to a paired smartphone which, in turn, transmits data to a Cloud data storage system. This data is gathered 24/7, 7 days a week and is processed by algorithms into one of eight predefined behavioural states:

  • Walking
  • Trotting
  • Canter/Gallop
  • Static / Inactive
  • Sleeping
  • Drinking
  • Eating
  • Head shaking

Validation

There are plenty of apps on the market that measure location and simple movement, but do not take that extra step to link that data with clinical outcomes. PetDialog+’s aim was to be able to construct an individual baseline and track changes in behaviour as measured from the PetDialog+ device. This baseline needed to be independent of owner’s habits and any environmental influences (e.g. weather) surrounding the pet.

Internal validation was performed based on data from Oggway ltd, Tel Aviv, Israel. This involved short sequential, targeted behavioural tracking aimed to train the device and include split-sample validation.

vHive performed external validation was performed as fully independent of University of Surrey and Zoetis Centre for Digital Innovation with a different population and breed mix including such variables as;

    • Continuous tagging

Types of validation

vHive performed video recordings of behaviour and observer interpretation which was painstakingly corresponded to the device outputs. In total 11.5 hours of tagged footage of 51 dogs was created and assessed.

High diagnostic accuracy

Our diagnostic effectiveness (the proportion of records correctly classified), was very high.

  • >95% for walk, trot, canter/gallop, eat, drink and headshake
  • >90% for static/inactive and sleep

The positive predictive values were all >95%, meaning that when the device classified a certain behaviour, the dog was usually displaying it.

Results                      

After our internal and external, independent validation research, the vHive team has concluded that not only does the device detect various kinds of behaviour that are correctly linked to the eight predefined behavioural states, but it promises to point to early indications of health and welfare issues in a dog that wears it such as normal itching behaviour during nighttime versus behaviour that can be indicative of an ear infection.  Also, its portability makes it feasible for mass commercialisation.
